Natural Honeymoon Island Top Visited State Park
A natural barrier island connected by the Dunedin Causeway, this State Park boasts four miles of sandy beaches, nature trails and abundant wildlife. Don't be surprised to see an endangered gopher tortoise walking across your path or hear the call of an osprey---or the bark of Fido, who can frolic freely on the dog beach. The Pinellas Trail (bicycling, walking and rollerblading trail) has a spur that runs the length of the Dunedin Causeway, and connects right to the park entrance.
Dunedin's Honeymoon Island has been praised for its serene atmosphere and its undisturbed natural beauty. Described as "not your typical beachgoer's beach," the barrier island sets itself apart because it lets visitors interact with the scenic natural environment of the area, from swimming to seashells to sunsets. So, it's not surprising this gem is Florida's top visited state park.
The island has been carefully preserved to protect its abundant wildlife, including several endangered species. The constantly evolving shores, and the adjacent sea grass beds, salt marshes and mangrove swamps, provide a unique habitat for a variety of little-noticed species. Visit the nature center, then head out for a beach hike. You are guaranteed to see sea life in a new light.
Honeymoon Island got its name from a Life Magazine contest for newlyweds in 1939; couples won a two-week honeymoon stay on the island. Photos of these love birds can be viewed at the park's two-story Rotary Club Centennial Nature Center.
Housed in a re-converted building that was once used as a beach cottage for the feature film "The Punisher", the Rotary Centennial Nature Center has a number of exhibits and interactive displays designed to better acquaint guests with the barrier islands and their natural communities. Exhibits allow visitors a better understanding of Honeymoon's ecosystem and the importance of preserving the island's beautiful, natural habitat.
This State Park includes amenities such as bathhouses, concessions, nature trails, picnic areas, a playground, restrooms, showers and wheelchair access.
