With the unfurling and parading of a 900-foot rainbow flag, St. Petersburg's Grand Central District will comes to life in June as the St. Pete Pride Festival celebrates arts, history and culture of the gay community.
"Pride in Paradise" is the culmination of a month-long slate of events that includes community outreach parties, an antique car show, cultural exhibitions and art auctions. The annual event began in 2003, with participation growing every year.
Related activities throughout June include Pride-themed theater at American Stage and baseball gatherings at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, as well as AIDS awareness fund raising walks and other festivities.
2009 celebrates the 7th Annual Pride in Paradise Event and event organizers say it is the largest Pride celebration in Florida. 85,000 attendees are expected at this year's celebration.
